What initially interested me in this book was curiosity, as I have an interest in the history of California agriculture, and the contribution of the Italian immigrants who, with their skills, knowledge and work ethic raised the food that many ate all over the country . Mr Comelli brought to life what it was like to be raised in a farming family on the part of the California coast just north of Santa Cruz. There is little documentation about Davenport and its history of neither farming nor the immigrants who farmed during the first half of the 20th century, as many of the buildings and the farms are now gone. Sad to say, there are many parts of California that shares this lack good documentation of the truthful history of who contributed to the success of this great state. I enjoyed Mr. Comelli’s writing in first person, as it was as if he were having a friendly conversation about the events in his life. I enjoyed hearing not only of his immediate family, but of the neighbors, how they interacted with one another, and the long term relationships they continued to have throughout their lives. This book was written from the heart! By him writing this book, he has not only brought to life the people of the area he was raised, but he conserved their memories.
