As a small child living on the coast, the artichoke plants would eventually make me a dwarf as they grew to their full height.
Regardless, of plants with thorns, or the cold, or the isolation I still loved living on the coast.
I think it was being self reliant and free in all that beauty that made me love coastal living. And there was my child's artistic soul that just loved that ranch/farm!
It was wonderful because there was no prejudice on our ranch. We all worked together, Mexicans, Phillippinos, etc. My father was easy-going and easy to get along with. My mother had her issues but mostly in Italy.
Now I would miss a bathroom but not then because I got used to the outhouse as a child.

The photo on the flyer appears in "La Nostra Costa" at the end of Chapter 14, "Famiglie Insieme" (Families Together). The photo was taken on the Gulch Ranch on the north side of our house (not in photo.) Standing in the backrow (left to right) are: Guido Cantarutti, Evelina Cantarutti,Giga Taurian,Bronco Comelli,Mario Taurian and Valentina Comelli.
Seated on irrigation pipes, in the front (left to right) are Lido Cantarutti, Reno Cantarutti, Elso Taurian, Felicino Taurian, Giovanni Primo (John) Comelli and Ivano Franco Comelli.
My brother John is holding the family dog "Capi".
Notice Guido Cantarutti's wind-blown tie - - A typical day 'su per la costa'

The artichoke plants are easily identifiable in the background In the foreground are Brussels sprout seedlings They will be allowed to grow for a few more weeks then they will be transplanted to various fields on the ranch which have been previosly prepared for their task by the spreading of copiuos amounts of 'pattume' (manure).

Here are the facts in regards to my family.
My father was Alessandro Quilici.
Our ranch/farm was located on the coast about five miles north of Davenport.
The ranch/farm was called The Foothill Ranch and bordered Scott Creek.
It had various terraces and the views were spectacular.
We used a lot of fertilizer and sometimes pesticides, not so heavy on manure but we did use it.
I should, in fact, be dead because of the pesticide use. Knock on wood.
It was a well run family farm/ranch.
I hope that this clears up all things such as I am not going to start a blog site to compete with Ivanos etc. I am, in fact, almost too busy to do the work that I have to do.
And that is why I have not completed the book.
I have decided, however, that a book will be written and I am determined to avoid all controversy.
At the beginning of writing on this blog site I encountered the most hostile atmosphere that I HAVE EVER encountered and this from fellow Italians.
I am even pondering whether I should try to explain myself.
I know that I am not well liked and so be it!
There is always Arriverderchi Roma!
