"JOE BROVIA DAY" - TODAY SEPTEMBER 24.

CATHY BROVIA REMINDS US THAT TODAY HAPPENS TO BE THE 'DAVENPORT DESTROYER'S VERY OWN DAY.

(TODAY) JUST HAPPENS TO BE "JOE BROVIA DAY"... In a proclamation signed by Mike Rotkin, Mayor of City of Santa Cruz, he notes in his last paragraph:::: Now, therefore, I Mike Rotkin, Mayor of the city of Santa Cruz, do hereby proclaim september 24, 2005 as "Joe Brovia Day"in the City of Santa Cruz and encourage all citizens to join me in honoring BASEBALL'S DAVENPORT DESTROYER AND SALUTING HIM FOR HIS FEARLESSNESS AT THE PLATE, HIS JOVIAL WIT, HIS LOVE OF FAMILY, AND ESPECIALLY, HIS LOVE AND DEVOTION TO HIS MANY BASEBALL FANS.

In the mayors proclamation, he noted Joe's being inducted into the PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE HALL OF FAME.

THANKS CATHY FOR THE REMINDER. I WILL HAVE A COUPLE OF PHOTOS OF JOE AT THE 'LA NOSTRA COSTA' PHOTO DISPLAY ON SATURDAY. IF YOU LIKE BRING SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOS. I WILL HAVE ROOM TO DISPLAY.

A DESCRIPTION WHAT A LAGUNA PICNIC WAS ALL ABOUT (LA NOSTRA COSTA, P. 234)

"These festive events were usually well attended, as attested to by an article appearing in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, dated September 6, 1949. Beneath the caption, "ITALO-AMERICAN BARBECUE SLATED UP COAST SUNDAY", it went on to quote publicity chairman John Battistini (according to the article, Mario Lazzerini was general chairman) as saying that the event, first held in 1934, usually attracted more than 1,000 people from Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Monterey Bay cities." I guess it was just to be understood that people living in Davenport or along the Coast Road would be there, since the article made no mention of their expected attendance.

'THE OLD RANCERE", WHO APPEARS IN PHOTO ABOVE WITH LOUIS BETTIOL, ONE OF THE LAST OF THE ORIGINAL RANCERI (LNC: Pge 95), INVITES ALL "LA NOSTRA COSTA" FANS TO JOIN HIM AT THIS YEARS DAVENPORT/COAST ROAD REUNION. HE PROMISES TO BRING HIS "SHAVOLA". ALSO THE AUTHOR OF 'LA NOSTRA COSTA'; IVANO FRANCO COMELLI, WILL BE THERE AND WILL GLADLY AUTOGRAPH ANY OF HIS BOOKS YOU MIGHT HAVE.

Oh my GB. The mention of the Laguna Picnics in the flyer bring back so many memories. (You did such a good job in writing about them in "La Nostra Costa".) I remember going to them when I was a little girl with my mother and father. I was so young then. I use to admire all those young boys from Davenport. (Of course they were all teen-agers at the time and much older than me.) Like you say in "La Nostra Costa" they were kind of the "ruffian" type. They liked to show off and pretend that they were real tough; smoking and drinking wine. I wonder what ever happen to them?? Memories, memories, memories. Carrrie

Dear Carrie: Some of those young boys (a little bit older now) will be at the BBQ on Sept 29. Sadly some have crossed "Il Ultimo Ponte" (The Last Bridge) and are no longer with us. However, many of their sons and daughters will be their. And we have photos, photos, and more photos of those young boys and their families. Come join us. ivn0

Ciao Ivano,

That's a great picture at the top of la Blagga. Naturally I spotted your family first, but can you identify some of the other people?

Keep up the good work. Best wishes for another happy Coast Road Reunion next month. Gino

Saluti, Gino

Ivano Franco Comelli said...

Thanks Gino. Seated on the ground is my family, Bronco and Valentina with me on her lap; Giovanni Primo is on her left;then Reno Cantarutti, and Felicino Taurian. I don't know who the men are to the right of Bronco, however, the boy is Guiliano Dughi, now deceased. Standing from left to right: Evelina Cantarutti (still living), Guido Cantarutti, Elena Moro;Pete Brovia;Maria Brovia,
Catherina Dughi. After that it becomes difficult for me to ID. The boy standing behind my brother is Fred Moro (deceased). At the extreme right of the photo is 'Giga' Taurian and the girl third from right, is Lina Brovia (15 years old-still living). At the rear second from right is Mario (Rosso) Taurian. All the people I was able to identify, I have written about in the book.(except for the Dughi's). Guiliano Dughi was a SCHS '54 graduate and died several years ago.

The photo was taken Circa 1938 in Bonny Doon on the old Iacopetti Property.

I'll miss you at the ReUnion. However, "Baffi" will be there. ivn0

Hi Ivano:

I read your book and I thought it was wonderful. Your stories about Davenport and the Coast were so vivid and real. I felt like I knew the people you wrote about even though I am not resident or former resident of Davenport or the Coast. Can I come to the ReUnion BBQ?? I probably will not know anyone there. Judy

Ivano Franco Comelli said...

Thanks for the kind words Judy. Since you have read "La Nostra Costa (Our Coast), you probably are well verse in some of the history of Davenport and "La Costa". You are most certainly welcome to come and you will know at least one person there ---me. I will be the one with the hat and 'shavola'-- the symbols of the 'ranceri' up the Coast. Bring your camera. The 'Old Rancere' loves to have his photo taken. Ivano Franco

Hi Ivano:

I love the picture on the Blagga referring to Davenport/Coast Road Reunion. There are two picture of two groups, and I was wondering if you could send the smaller group picture to me so I could print it out.

I love this picture, as my mother and father (Guido Giovannoni, and Virginia Brovia) are in this picture and so are both my grandparents. (Pete & Maria Brovia and Bill Giovannoni). If you are able to send it directly to my email maybe I can print it out. Sure would love to have a copy of this one.

Thank you, and I really enjoy reading the Blagga, a lot of good stories.

See you at Davenport Days!!

Nadine

Thanks Nadine: The photo is on its way. ivn0

Gran Blaggataore: You write a whole chapter in your book about Pescadero and how your family used to vistit your "God-fathers' Resturant the 'Elkhorn Bar and Resturant. Yet the flyer does not mention Residents of Pescadero. Are we not invited //?? Paul

GB said...

Paul: Just happen to be on-line when your comment came in. This is a Davenport/Coast Road ReUnion BBQ. FOR ALL INTENT AND PURPOSE THE COAST ROAD FOR THIS EVENT STRETCHES FROM SANTA CRUZ TO HALF MOON BAY and maybe beyond. ALL ARE WELCOMED. Sorry this was left off the flyer. GB

pecadero paul said...

There they go again. Peggy Townsend's name dropping article re:
Davenport/Coast Road fails to mention Pescadero. Do these people really think that the Coast Road ends at Davenport/Swanton. What about Half Moon Bay. Get with it folks the Coast Road extends further north than your beloved Davenport. BTW: Is that really Elio Rodoni on that "bug"
in the top photo. That's really a
a classic. P/P

Ivano Franco Comelli said...

Paul: Again I don't think Pescadero was intentionally left off the list by the 'Committee". If it is any consolation for you, in "La Nostra Costa" (P21), I describe the Coast Road as follows:"......a major roadway for automobile traffic going to and from Santa Cruz,Davenport, Pescadero, San Gregorio, Half Moon Bay and San Francisco." I further added (tongue in cheek) that Cucamonga was not and is not on the Coast Road. Hopefully, that clarifies the issue for everyone. ivano

Pescadero? Where's that?

Even after zip codes were invented, our mail addressed to "Coastways Ranch, Pescadero, Calif" got to us sometimes months late, stamped "missent to Atascadero". Wherever the heck that is.

Do they still dance the shamarita in Pescadero?

Have a great gathering. See you next year.

Very cool, Ivano....Love the one of Fabbi.....Man, how time has flown by. In my mind, I still think Fabrizzio must look like that still because I haven't seen him in so many years. He was President of my class...the class of 1959.
Ciao.

To Hank: For your information Pescadero has a very nice and efficient Post Office. In fact it sits on the same site that Ivano Franco says the Elk Horn Bar was.

Too bad you are not going to make it for the Davenport/Coast Road/Cucamonga Reunion. I'ld show you what the 'Shamarita' is all about today. P/P

Hank Bradley said...

Greetings to P Paul & company,

I just returned from the 50th reunion of the Santa Cruz High School class of 1957, so apologies for the late reply.

There I ran into John Mello and Gene Bettencourt, who used to play for Portuguese dances all around the Bay area as the MusicCaters. They corrected my spelling, too. It's 'Chamarita'. Too bad they don't play any more. But the only Chamarita I ever attended was about 1955, in the IDES Hall in Pescadero, (dang, no it wasn't. It was in the old high school), and I think I remember that we dancers circulated clockwise around the hall.

But Pescadero has gone to the dogs. On summer softball practice nights we used to visit 'DUARTE'S _AVERN' (some silly old regulation prohibited the word 'tavern', so one letter was scratched off their sign for years).

Worse, that magnificent flagpole was right spung in the middle of the main intersection where God intended it to be, and much taller before some dummies sawed it off and moved it. Extremely convenient to lay perfect circles of rubber around it in whatever family car we could borrow.

Also convenient for the San Mateo County Sheriff, who once captured quite a number of rowdy citizens in Pescadero and had to park them overnight without a jail. How? Handcuff them in a circle, of course, around that flagpole and let them spend the night on the pavement reflecting on whatever sins they'd committed.

I think I remember a 'Joe Brovia Day' in Davenport from somewhere in the '50s. Was it September 24? Or is my memory off altogether?

Hi Ivno!!!!

Re: Joe Brovia Bench in LaBarranca
Park in Santa Cruz

..... the City Parks and Rec., called me yesterday, to let me know that the bench would most likely be installed this Wednesday, if he can get the two gals to figure out a schedule, they will let me know if it is Morning or Afternoon... Would have been nice if they had installed it this week, and you could drive by and check it out.... Those gals have done a spectacular job of installing those benches, and keeping the park spotless. They should get recognition for the hard work they do. They make sure those benches are clean of bird droppings, and graffiti, along with pulling weeds and picking up litter, I am not sure if they mow the lawn, but it would not surprise me...

I think I told you where it (Joe's Bench) will be installed..... In LaBarranca park, where Liberty St., intersects with Bay Street..... Make sense..??? La Barranca Park runs from California St., to Laguna On the left side of Bay street, heading toward West Cliff... Joe is also included in the stanchion, or plaque just a short distance before the bench, where Centennial intersects with Bay....It was so nice of the city to place the items right under the street lights.

Thanks for the nice picture of Joe on your Blagga,

Sempre Avanti..... Cathy
